Join Kickapoo Woods Cooperative to welcome Samuel Thayer – Edible Wild Plant Expert and author of two award-winning books, Nature’s Garden and The Forager’s Harvest. Samuel will guide us through the natural world and give insights on what goods are in our woods and even some tips on how landowners can profit from them.

With a focus on native nut trees, we will be observing and discussing all the native nut trees of the Driftless region, with a special focus on bitternut hickory as an edible oil crop. Samuel will discuss the ecology and management of this species, as well as the harvest of the nuts. Landowners will have the opportunity to get information on additional income opportunities from this sustainable resource, without the large capital inputs required for maple syrup. We will also identify and discuss common edible understory plants associated with our native nut stands.  KWC is excited to welcome Samuel to our area.
