Dense Canopy in a Maple Stand

This two aged stand has a very dense canopy that blocks out a lot of light. Notice how little undergrowth there is on the forest floor. There are scattered sawtimber sized trees in the stand, but the most abundant trees are the small sugar maple that originated after the land was no longer pastured. You can see that some of the small maples died and fell down because competition for light was too great. This self thinning is a normal and desirable part of stand development.
