A failed girdle

Here’s a shot of a shagbark hickory that was double girdled in a timber stand improvement project just a couple of years ago. It’s amazing how fast the tree bridged the girdle. I’ve seen hickory bridge girdles on three properties now. I don’t recommend girdling if you plan to kill hickory. Either cut the hickory down and accept that you’ll have some stump sprouts, or apply herbicide.
